Within a disciplined and caring environment Hymers College provides opportunities for its pupils to achieve success in a great variety of academic and extra-curricular areas. early all pupils go into the Sixth Form and, from there, into Higher Education. Up to Year 11 there is a broadly-based curriculum, but some choices are available to enable pupils to benefit from their strengths; pupils may take three single Sciences to GCSE, two Modern Languages, in addition to the usual options such as Music, Art, Etc.
Emphasis is placed on involvement in extra-curricular activities and the school has a reputation for its sport, music and drama. In recent years regional and national success has been reached in these areas on a number of occasions.
There is an effective pastoral system based on form-teachers; careers guidance and advice concerning higher education is a strength; pupil are also encouraged to help the local community.
The school has a stable and well-qualified staff who are committed to bringing out the best of each individual pupil, so ensuring that the high-flyer and less able alike are able to achieve success.
An extensive building programme has taken place over the last 10 years, and a new theatre and 6th Form Centre were opened in 1995.
The School has its own bursaries.
In recent years examination results at GCSE and A level have been outstanding. In 1996 there was a 99.6% pass rate (grades A-C) at GCSE; at A level 61% of the grades were A/B.
